Chilled Water Pipe Insulation Systems

Dyplast offers complete insulation systems for piping that operate at below-ambient temperatures, such as chilled water pipe insulation and refrigerant mechanical insulation. Such mechanical insulation applications present special challenges due the possibility of water vapor movement to the cold surface. Phenolic and polyiso mechanical insulation systems have been demonstrated as optimal for this environment.

If the operating temperature of the system is below the dew point of the ambient air, condensation will occur on the cold surface, creating a vapor pressure gradient through the system. This vapor pressure gradient serves as the driving force for water migration toward the cold surface of the chilled water pipe insulation system. If these conditions remain for extended periods of time, a significant amount of liquid water can accumulate in the system. Below-ambient systems therefore require special attention to the design to maintain thermal performance.
